The principle of operation is simple and is based on comparing the viscosity of a sample of oil with an oil of known viscosity. The viscosity reading is made in either saybolt universal seconds at 100°F or centistokes at 40°C at room temperature. No calculations are necessary. An accuracy of 95% or better is easily achieved when making tests, and careful operators can test to ±1% accuracy. More visgages are in use throughout the world than any other type viscometer, and for very good reasons - better accuracy and easier operation. Unless you are willing to pay a very high price for viscosity tests, your operator in the field can consistently test as accurately as most commercial laboratories, and much faster - especially when you need to know results right now.
